2 to 4 Months

My Sweet Kosta,

Wow, time has flown by.  I feel like I blinked one time and now you are about to be 4 months old!  I cannot believe how much you are growing every single day.  It seems like just yesterday we were putting newborn baby diapers on you, and now we are putting size THREE diapers on you!

I wish I could slow down this time in our lives so we can enjoy you being this small for a while, but then again I cannot wait to see how you grow!

The past two months you have learned to do so many new things - it is amazing.  Here are some of the things you can do now:

  • Reach out for your toys and put them in your mouth
  • Roll over from your tummy to your back - 5/26/12

  • Roll over from your back to your tummy - you just accomplished this today! 6/26/12
    • We don't have a video yet..but as soon as I do, I will post it!
Side note: ** I just realized that you rolled over from your back to your tummy exactly ONE MONTH from when you rolled over from your tummy to your back - You are amazing! **
  • You are learning your name! You immediately respond when someone says "Kosta" - you look right at them.
  • You laugh all the time - anything and everything seems to crack you up, which I love!

You are changing so much.  Some days I think you look more like me and other days you look just like your Daddy.  If I look directly at you, I think you look like me, but your profile is definitely your Daddy's.

Here's a picture of you at around 2 months old:

Here's a picture of you at around 3 months old:

Here's a picture of you at almost 4 months old:

Well, you are almost 4 months now - just 8 more days and you'll be 4 months! (July 4, 2012 - Independence Day)

We have your four-month well check-up on July 5th - I'm not looking forward to it because I think they will be giving you more shots, and it hurts Mommy to see you in pain :(  But you are so tough and I know you'll be just fine!

Well, you still haven't developed a set schedule for eating, sleeping, and playing, but I am sure we will get on a routine soon.  We're trying to help you get on a routine by taking you on a walk in the morning, then putting you down for a nap.  However, our walks seem to start at different times int he morning.

Then at 6 PM we give you a bath and after Mommy gives you a baby massage, which you love!  As soon as Mommy turns on your Baby Einstein playlist, you know it's time for your bath and massage - you start kicking your feet and cooing immediately.

Here are some pictures from last night's bath time and massage:

Right after bath time

Waiting for your massage and listening to your music

And this is you telling Mommy to stop taking pictures and get back to work - ha ha :)

Well, you just woke up a little late from your nap so I guess you'll be getting a 7:30 PM bath and massage.

I love you so so much Kosta!  You continue to amaze me every single day.

Love Always,

Mommy

Ouchie!

Dear Sweet Kosta,

Yesterday was your "two-month" check-up (it was a little over a week earlier than it was supposed to be.)    I was so sad all day because I knew I would have to take you to your appointment at 1:40 PM and you would be getting your vaccinations.  However, I was extremely excited to find out how much you have grown since you were born.

Here are your measurements at 7 weeks and 3 days old on April 25, 2012:

Height: 23 1/2 inches (90 percentile)

Weight: 12 lbs. 11 oz. (75 percentile)

Head: 38 1/2 cm. (55 percentile)

You are growing up so fast - it's amazing.  I do wish you would slow down just a bit so I can enjoy you being this small, but then again I can't wait to see you walk and talk!

On to the sad part...the shots!  Gamma tried to prepare me for your shots, but it was impossible to be prepared.  Daddy was holding you when it was time for your shots.

First, the nurse gave you the polio vaccine.  You loved that one because it was a liquid that you had to drink.  I think it was sweet or something because you just sucked it down like a happy little boy.

Then it was time for your shots. Daddy held on to your little hands while the nurse gave you 3 shots - two in one leg and one in the other leg.  I stood behind Daddy watching you from over his shoulder.

You cried a cry I have never heard before because it was a cry of real pain.  I burst into tears immediately (I am crying again just thinking/writing about it).  Daddy said you squeezed his hands real tight when the mean nurse gave you your shots.  It took a little while to calm you down, but it took even longer to calm me down!  You were so brave though.  As soon as we got back into the car you were content.

Here is a picture of Daddy trying to cheer you up when we got back home...Daddy is the BEST and he loves you more than anything:

See your little boo-boos? :(

When we got home you were a little fussy.  I think because your legs were sore from the shots.  We could tell all you wanted to do was sleep so we immediately put you in your PJs.  You were worn out after your doctor's appointment and pretty much slept the rest of the day.

See how worn out you were:

By the way, you love sleeping in your Daddy's arm pit.  I'm not sure why, but you always bury your little face there!  :)

Anyway, today was definitely a better day than yesterday.  You're still pretty worn out from your shots, but you seem to be a lot happier.

Here are a few updates from the past month:

-You are really starting to smile and recognize everyone

-You are starting to giggle a lot and not just in your sleep!

-You giggle A LOT when Uncle Drew (Tio Andres) talks to you..he's so silly!

-You can hold and shake your rattle now - it makes you really happy

-You LOVE trying to stand up...your little legs are so strong

-You get the hiccups all the time and you hate them...luckily you don't have them 3 or 4 times a day like you did when you were inside my tummy

-You prefer sleeping on your tummy...but you have to sleep on your back a night, which makes you a little fussy (you're sleeping on your tummy right now as I type)

-You still don't have a set "schedule" of when you eat and sleep...however, you do sleep most during the day

-You LOVE hanging out with Gamma...especially when she takes you for a walk around her garden

Here's a picture of you in Gamma's arms today (4/26/12)

Gamma has the magic touch and can get you to fall asleep in a heartbeat.  I told her today that she must be the "baby whisperer" because you always fall asleep in her arms.

-You finally got to meet Papou (Grandpa) on April 25, 2012.  He works in Saudi Arabia and only gets to come home every 3 months.  We've talked to him a few times on skype so he could see you, but this was the first time he got to see you in person.

Well, it is starting to storm and you're starting to wake up (I think because of the thunder).

Daddy and I love you so so much sweetie.

Love,

Mommy

Christos Anesti! Alithos Anesti!

Christ is risen! Truly he is risen!

Today is a day for many celebrations.

First, we are celebrating Kosta's first Greek Orthodox Easter.  Greek Orthodox Easter tends to fall on a different date than Western Easter because of three very important reasons: (1) Greek Orthodox Easter is based on the Julian calendar, (2) it must fall after Jewish Passover, and (3) it must be on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox.

Here's a picture of Kosta and his first Easter basket:

Also, since Kosta's Papou (Papou means Grandpa in Greek) is still in Saudi Arabia, we decided to make a little video to send to him.  Here's the video we sent to my Dad:

Second, we are celebrating mine and Rudy's two-year anniversary since we had our civil ceremony with a lawyer on this day two years ago.  Rudy and I are in the process of completing all of his paperwork to become a resident of the United States.  Today is an important day because it will help us with obtaining Rudy's green card.

If you apply for a green card before you have been married for two years, the government places a "condition" on your residency.  This means that after two years of marriage we would have to do more paperwork and spend more money to remove the "condition" from his green card.  Yay for not having to do that!

Here is a picture of us on our little "honeymoon" trip 3 days after our civil ceremony:

Third, we are celebrating Kosta's six weeks!  I cannot believe I have a six-week old.  He is the most precious baby on the planet!  I could sit and stare at him all day long...but then I wouldn't get anything done.

He is getting so big!  I am totally amazed at how well he holds his head up.  He's also starting to find his fingers and try to suck his thumb - it's so cute.  Here's a little video to prove it!

He's also really starting to smile and laugh.  Ahh I just love him!

Sweet Angel

Dear Kosta,

You are two weeks and two days old today, and I can't believe how much you have already changed since the day you were born.  You don't seem like a newborn because you've been able to hold your head up from the very beginning.  You are growing up so quickly and it scares me. We've hit some pretty major milestones over these last two weeks.

On Friday, March 16, 2012 you rolled over from your back onto your stomach.  Gamma and I nearly had heart attacks because you're so little and should not be able to do that yet.  We were outside practicing tummy time, which I am afraid to do now because you're starting to roll over so early.  You are very determined and so smart.

On Saturday, March 17, 2012, we celebrated your first St. Patrick's Day.  We had a BBQ and hung out on the back porch most of the day.  It was sunny and beautiful - you love being outside.  Here's a picture of Mama, Papi and you enjoying the beautiful day.

On your two-week birthday, Sunday, March 18, 2012, your umbilical cord finally fell off.  I can't wait to see what your belly button really looks like when it is totally healed.  It's already so cute without the black covering it up.

You took your first, real bath yesterday (March 19, 2012).  You LOVED it!  You really love when Mama washes your hair - I think it relaxes you.  Papi and I were so relieved to know that you like the water.  Hopefully you'll also enjoy the ocean as much as Mama and Papi.  Here's a few pictures of you playing in the bath tub.  Don't worry - I won't show any totally nakey pictures of you for the world to see!

You are such a happy baby.  The only time you cry is when you're hungry or need a diaper change.  Other than that, you are so chill and love to just hang out.  You also really enjoy riding in the car.  At first you are awake and looking around at everything and then you drift off to sleep.  As soon as the car stops you wake right back up.

Just the other night, you introduced a new type of cry that broke my heart.  You were asleep when this happened and then woke up crying.  I think you may have been having a bad dream.  I burst into tears because you were in tears, but as soon as I picked you up the crying stopped.

I just can't get enough of you.  You melt my heart every time I look at you.  Bringing you into this world brought purpose to my life.  I was born to be a Mommy and I am so lucky you and Papi are in my life.

I look forward to the many milestones that we will reach together as you grow. I love you so much.  You are Mama and Papi's miracle.

Love,

Mama

It's Time

"Is it really time?"

These were the words I mumbled to myself when the nurse finally told me I was 10 cm dilated and ready to push.  After waiting what seemed like the longest 9 months of my life, it was time to push!

I couldn't believe how fast time seemed to fly when I realized this was the moment.

So here it is...the story of the events that led up to the most glorious moment in my life.

February 22 - On this day, I found out I was 3 cm dilated.  The doctor told me that Kosta could make his arrival at anytime.  At this point I was so relieved I made it that far without going into labor because Rudy hadn't gotten here yet.  Luckily, Rudy was coming home the next day.

Here's a picture of Rudy's arrival to the US (I was beyond happy at this point):

February 29 - On this day, the doctor told me that I probably wouldn't make it to the next appointment.  I was slightly more dilated, but not by much.  After talking for a while, she and I decided that the best option would be to induce me on the following Monday, March 5, 2012.  However, I had a strange feeling that I wasn't going to make it until Monday...and I was right.

March 3 - Bloody show? Yep, that's right.  Today was the day that I had a tiny bit of bleeding at 5:30 a.m., which the book "What to Expect When Expecting" informed me was "bloody show time" for labor.  Throughout the day I had some cramping, but nothing regular and nothing too painful.  Rudy, my Mama, and I decided to get everything ready for the hospital just in case.  Well, the day passed and I just knew Kosta would likely wake me up in the middle of the night.

March 4 - 2:30 a.m. "ouch, what was that??" I woke up at this time having cramping, especially in my back.  All I could think was "please God don't let me have back labor pains".  I had read so much about how painful back labor is and I was thinking it would be just my luck that it would happen to me because I was so worried about it.  Anyway, at this point I couldn't decide whether or not the cramps were contractions or just slight cramping.  I stared at Rudy for the longest time while he was sleeping trying to decide if I should wake him up or if it was just a false alarm.

After getting up about 4 times to pee from 2:30 a.m. until 4:30 a.m., I knew it was show time.  I started having a lot of bleeding, which scared the you know what out of me so I called the on-call OB nurse who told me to get to the hospital immediately.  I woke up Rudy and my Mom and let them know it was time to head out.  My contractions weren't too painful at this point, but my nerves were starting to get to me.  I was freaking out because of the bleeding - I was worried something was wrong.

We got to St. Francis Hospital on Patewood at around 5:15 a.m.  They got me checked in quickly and to the first room to check my vitals (contractions, heart beat, blood pressure) as well as check on Kosta.  The nurse reassured me that everything was fine and that I was already 5 cm dilated.  She also let me know that the doctor who was on call was not a doctor from my OBGYN group.  (Kind of hilarious because they made me see every doctor at my OBGYN group to make sure I would be comfortable with each of them in case my OBGYN was not on call the day of my labor.)

After checking my vitals and checking on Kosta, they moved us to my labor and delivery suite.  The suite was huge!  It had everything they could possibly need in the room, which was super awesome.

By this point, the contractions were coming on pretty strong and I was trying to decide if it was time for the epidural or just some pain medicine.  They checked my cervix one more time and I was 6 cm dilated...moving right along.  The nurse decided to call the Dr. Keith to see what she preferred, which was to go ahead and give me the epidural.

It was around 7 a.m. by the time the nurses came in to give me the epidural.  The nurse asked if I had any questions about the epidural and I kindly said "no, but I do not want to see it at all".  She was great - she walked me through the whole process; however, it did not make the process less painful.  Rudy watched while she injected the medicine into my back, which he claims was just as painful to watch.

Time passed and I finally couldn't feel anything below my belly button.  Talk about a weird sensation.  At 8:30 a.m., Susan (my delivery nurse) and Dr. Keith came in to check my cervix once again.  I was 8 cm dilated!  They couldn't believe how quickly I was progressing - everyone started making bets on when I would be 10 cm and ready to push.

Unfortunately, things started slowing down at around 10 a.m. so Dr. Keith decided to go ahead and start giving me Pitocin to get the contractions going again.

Here's a picture of the nurses getting everything set up for the Pitocin:

Susan, my nurse, informed me that with the Pitocin I should be 10 cm dilated by noon.  I started feeling nauseous from all of the medicine; luckily, I had Rudy's cold hands to cool my face off, which made everything better.

Well, Susan was almost right...at 12 p.m. I was almost fully dilated; however, because they had a pillow under my right side, part of the right side of my cervix was still not fully dilated.  They placed the pillow under my left side.  After about 30 minutes, she came back in the room to check me...

"It's time," she said.

"It's time?" I thought to myself. Holy moly, it's time!!

I looked at Rudy and my Mom who were both smiling from ear-to-ear.  My heart was racing a million miles per minute.

Here's a picture of our pure joy before I had to start pushing:

Susan let me know she was going to set everything up for labor and inform Dr. Keith that it was time to get  started pushing.  Susan was an amazing coach for me.  I didn't go to any birthing classes nor did I know any breathing techniques for giving birth.  She informed me that for every contraction I would push 3 times  for 10 seconds each time.

To prepare for the real thing, we did a practice run.  She thought I'd probably need to do more than 5 or 10 practice pushes before I got the hang of it, but I didn't need to at all.  The first contraction started so I started pushing.  Susan said "well, we don't need to do anymore practice pushes...I can already see baby boy's hair and it's not dark hair like I thought it would be...I'm going to get Dr. Keith!"

Dr. Keith as well as a few other nurses came in to really get things started.  Dr. Keith was super awesome.  She constantly applied mineral oil throughout the process so that I would have minimal tearing if any at all.  Mom, Rudy, the nurses, and Dr. Keith coached me through the pushing.  They encouraged me and let me know how well I was doing for a first-time Mom.

I was completely and utterly amazed that I felt absolutely no pain throughout the pushing process...only pressure.  What had I been afraid of?  I guess all of the horror stories I had heard really had me worried, but I had an amazing experience.

Well, I pushed and pushed as hard and as much as possible from 1:00 p.m. until 1:58 p.m., when Kosta finally made his arrival.

1:58 p.m. was Kosta's time of birth.  I heard his beautiful cry as soon as he came out.  I totally lost it.  With tears of joy streaming down everyone's faces, we saw Kosta for the first time.  While Dr. Keith got me all fixed up, the rest of the nurses tended to Kosta.

Kosta Andrés Diaz - born March 4, 2012 at 1:58 p.m. weighing in at 7lbs 15oz and 20 1/2 inches long.

After the nurses cleaned up Kosta and finished checking his vitals, it was time for me to meet my little surfer baby.  Finally after 9 long months of waiting, I was holding my child...let me say that again...MY CHILD!  I couldn't believe that the miracle I was holding in my hands was real.  I was finally holding my angel.

Here are pictures of Gamma (Grandmama Marie) and Rudy holding our little angel.

After all of that, Susan moved us into my "mother and baby suite".  From then on, we were surrounded by the best nurses who took such amazing care of all of us.  The room was perfect for our two-night stay in the hospital.  The room was stocked with everything we could possibly need.

St. Francis Hospital has a family friendly philosophy, which they encourage mothers to have their babies in the suite with them at all times.  I loved the philosophy and I was beyond happy having Kosta in the room with me the whole time.

Well, I know I've gone way too far explaining the whole story, but I wanted everyone to know just how amazing was Kosta's birth.

I will come back later to post more about Kosta's first days at home!

Baby Shower 2/11/12

OK - I have been M.I.A. for a while now trying to get things ready for Kosta's arrival, but that's no excuse not to give a quick update.  Sorry blog friends!

Anyway, here's an update:

A week ago today, my sister-in-law Elizabeth threw me the most INCREDIBLE baby shower!  She totally out-did herself and I cannot even begin to explain how thankful I am for her and her generous, sweet heart.

Elizabeth, her mom, and my brother Jason went all out preparing my baby shower.  They made all the good food as well as decorated Elizabeth's office with tons of goodies.  The theme for the baby shower was "She's about to Pop," which was perfect because it's so true!

Here are pictures from the shower:
